The other day, my brother FaceTimed his friend. “ Assalamu Alaikum. ” Without missing a beat, his friend smiled and replied, “ Jai Shri Ram. ” Then they laughed and got on with whatever boys talk about. No debates. No outrage. No insecurity. Just friendship. It made me wonder when we, as adults, started forgetting what children seem to understand so effortlessly—that love doesn’t ask for your religion before it decides whether you belong. Tupac once gave the world the acronym THUG LIFE : “The Hate U Give Little Infants F * s Everybody.” Hate is learned. It isn’t born with us. Every generation inherits a little of what the one before it chooses to pass down. Watching those two boys reminded me that maybe we still have a choice.
